I recently had one of the coolest assignments I’ve had in a long time, photographing US Sailing Olympic Regattas event from a yacht.
Very exciting. Very beautiful. Very professional. Very amazing people.
Until I got seasick.
My brain immediately went to:
How am I going to manage two heavy cameras, keep shooting, move around this boat and stabilize my body like a tripod when absolutely nothing underneath me is stable?
Great!
So at one point I quietly disappeared upstairs for about two minutes, chugged water, stared out at the ocean and tried to pull myself together without anyone realizing I was having a private disagreement with the Pacific.
Then I went back to work.
The next morning shoot day I took Dramamine.
Reluctantly, because apparently I had decided taking Dramamine was somehow more dramatic than getting seasick again.
And guess what?
Completely fine.
No nausea. No secret upper deck recovery. No arguing with the ocean.
So here’s what I learned:
Being prepared for a photo assignment isn’t just about my camera gear.
Sometimes it’s sunscreen and Dramamine.
